About Kauai
One of Kauai's many beaches
Kauai, The Garden Island, offers much to all who visit or reside here: incredible beauty, a relaxed way of life, and perhaps most important, the Aloha Spirit.
The beauty is found in the ocean, mountains, flowers, rainbows, and sunsets. It's hard not to say, "Oh, look at that" at every turn in the road. Within just a short distance, the ocean can change from sapphire blue, clear, calm and peaceful, to a thunderous roaring surf whose white-capped waves splash down and surge onto golden beaches. The beaches are open to everyone, yet never seem crowded. At certain times of the year, whales and dolphins are plentiful and are easily seen frolicking near the shore.
Bird of Paradise
Mountains, furrowed by plummeting waterfalls, seem to leap right out of the ocean and comprise much of the island. Many of the best hiking trails and vistas in the world are found here. Some trails wind by heiau (ancient sacred grounds) filled with mystery and a sense of the spiritual past. Many stories are told about the sacred places.
The flowers and plants are so abundant that it is almost impossible to remember the names of all of them....Plumeria, Birds of Paradise, Heliconia, Antherium, Ti, Ginger and Orchids...to mention a few. There are several botanical gardens that are great places to wander about.
Kilauea Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge
Those postcard photos of the famous sunsets -- so beautiful they seem unreal-- are in fact of very real sunsets, breathtakingly radiant and truly awe-inspiring. The way of life on Kauai is soothing and "laid back." Everything is just a little slower than the mainland here. Visitors and residents alike take time to savor the things that make life enjoyable. It is wonderfully refreshing to calm down and enjoy each new day with its special adornments.
Another of Kauai's gifts is varied and often unique bird life. The adventurous may seek unusual birds such as a bright red i'iwi, or a tiny yellow 'amakihi on guided tours of the Alakai Swamp, high in Koke'e, but even the person who is not particularly interested in seeking out forest birds will see many white tropical birds soaring and swooping gracefully overhead, and may enjoy watching the many birds including albatross and cliff-dwelling shearwaters to be seen near Kilauea Lighthouse.
Aerial View of Ke'e Beach and the Na Pali coast
For many, it is a special thrill to see the vivid rainbows arched in the sky or rainbow colors dancing across ponds. All the above is wrapped up in the Aloha Spirit. This can't be described, just felt.
Why not visit this unique Island and find that Spirit for yourself?
From Webster's Dictionary:
Par-a-dise /n/ a place of bliss.
This is why we refer to Kauai as Paradise.
